Things I believe about death
Things I believe about longevity
There are some deaths which are not good deaths, and we should fight to give those people as much choice as they want.
I think it’s okay to die. At least, I don’t see death as unilaterally bad as I used to. I can imagine worlds in which I might want to die, but I’d personally want to take a lot of time to get there.
I think it’s bad to let fear of death drive all of your decision making - in fact, I think it’s preferable to explore states (ie no self) in which this fear feels quite different
I think empathy for others is good and tells us important things - when I see someone I love suffering or not able to do the things they would like in full freedom because they feel pain, it feels very clear to me that technology that would help them have more choice over how they are feeling would be good - I trust this impulse.
I think much can be learned from suffering, and from limitation. I don’t think that means that I should not try to help those who are suffering.
I think it’s very hard to balance acceptance of things we cannot change (which is psychologically valuable and healthy) with fighting hard to change things that should be changed.
